In Search of "The Perfect Driveway"

Having serviced, repaired and sealcoated thousands of driveways, our team of 10 BLACK DAWG locations has a pretty good idea of what can and can't be done to pavement.  Often we'll hear a customer proclaim they'd like their driveway to look "perfect".  The truth is, there is no such thing as "The Perfect Driveway".

Asphalt, by its nature, is anything but "perfect".  It is composed of many ingredients; the main one being stone aggregate.  Aggregate is irregular in shape.  Even when combined with asphalt binders and compacted, asphalt will still retain many of its irregularities.  Because asphalt cannot be compacted so tightly as to make a perfectly smooth surface, your driveway or parking lot will remain porous and, for some, less than "perfect".

While proper sealcoating can help fill in the voids in the asphalt, it is not a "leveling agent" per se and will still show irregularities in its appearance.  Additionally, proper crack sealing will further disrupt the "smooth" factor of your pavement as the bands of rubber will still be visible after sealing.  Short of expensive infrared repair tecnhiques, there is nothing that can be done to make cracks disappear.

Often, when I ask our senior foreman how a particular job has gone, he'll respond with "perfect".  I know what he's saying - he's saying that all the elements of a thorough sealcoat job have come together and the driveway or parking lot is looking its best and there's nothing more that could be done to make it look any better.  Sealcoating a driveway or parking lot is not rocket science, but it's much more involved than simply putting black stuff on the pavement.

If you're searching for "The Perfect driveway" you will likely be disappointed.  If you're searching for an asphalt maintenance team dedicated to taking every step possible to seal and protect your driveway or parking lot and have it looking good and as it should, you've come to the right place.
